A limestone “tied” island in the English Channel south of Weymouth, Portland is attached to the mainland via a causeway from Chesil Beach. Just 4 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, one of its best-known features is Portland Bill, the southern tip of island, and the red-and-white lighthouse based there. The lighthouse is now remotely controlled, and hosts a visitors' centre providing information and guided tours.
Portland is part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and East Devon coastline, notable for its geology and landforms. Portland stone is famous for its use in architecture worldwide, including buildings such as Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral. The isle also boasts an extensive range of flora and fauna, as a consequence of its isolated coastal location.
Portland has been occupied since prehistoric times and offers a fascinating history. In 1540 the Tudors built Portland Castle, which is now an English Heritage property and open to the public. The Castle overlooks Portland Harbour, one of the largest manmade harbours in the world.
Other attractions on the island include: Portland Museum; Portland’s quarries; The Royal Manor Theatre; Fancy’s Family Farm; and The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre (on Chesil Beach).
